Mark a Chat or Message as Unread

Mark a Chat or Message as Unread

Marking a chat or a single message as unread is a way to flag something you want to come back to. The chat stays bold in your Inbox, and a green New marker appears above the message you marked so you can find your place again when you return.

This is available to every member on web, desktop, and mobile, and it only changes what you see. Other members in the chat aren’t notified and their own read state doesn’t change.

How to mark a message as unread in New Expensify

Use this when you want to come back to one specific message in a conversation.

Mobile:

What the New marker shows you

The New marker is a green line labeled New inside a chat. It sits directly above the oldest message you haven’t read yet, so everything below it is new to you.

When you mark a message as unread, the marker anchors to that exact message instead. It stays on that message while you’re in the chat, even if other members send new messages in the meantime.

A message you just sent never gets a New marker above it. If you want the marker on something you wrote, mark that message as unread.

How long the New marker stays on a message

The marker stays anchored to the message you marked for as long as you’re in that chat, and the chat stays unread in your Inbox after you leave it.

Opening the chat again marks it as read and clears the marker. If you still want to come back to that message later, mark it as unread again before you leave.

FAQ

Can I mark my own message as unread?

Yes. Marking one of your own messages as unread flags the chat and puts the New marker above that message, exactly as it does for a message from someone else.

Why don’t I see Mark as read when I right-click a message?

Mark as read applies to a whole chat, not to a single message. Right-click, or long-press on mobile, the chat in your Inbox instead, and the option appears there when that chat is unread.

What happens to the New marker if I delete the message I marked as unread?

The marker moves to the next unread message in the chat rather than disappearing.

Does marking a chat or message as unread affect anyone else?

No. Read state is per member, so this only changes your own Inbox and your own view of the chat. No one is notified.
